Tina's Translation: Geekdom

If I needed to write a resume for being a nerd, I would include my lifelong love of the English language. My love of poetry and creative writing makes me creative, but my interest in Etymology makes me a nerd. As does my budding antique dictionary and reference book collection.

In the spirit of the second grader who always wanted to read an unabridged dictionary from cover to cover someday, I am hereby christening a brand new semi-regular feature:

Tina's Translations (ta-da) is where I will "define" some aspect of language.

Usually this will be a tongue
-in-cheek observation of how words are used in our modern world.

With no further delay, I present for all, my personal translation:

Geekdom: [
gēk-duhm]

Noun. Derived from late twentieth century slang.

Play on word "kingdom", noun, combined with "geek", slang noun.

Meaning: the domain that is under the rule of a geek or nerd.

Traditionally this is the basement of the geek's parent's house.

However as geeks have made headway into mainstream society, the definition has explained to include many successful companies founded by geeks. Also any information technology (IT) department.

Anywhere a geek's defining artifacts are housed, e.i. room with Star Trek model ships, or box of Star War figurines.

In cyberspace, geekdom includes any site at which the geek has admin or webmaster status.

One or more geeks can rule any geekdom, wither virtual or real space.

Study Questions: Where is your personal geekdom?
Do you have more than one?
Do you share them with other geeks or nerds?
Write about your geekdom and how do you define it.

Please leave your answers in the comments. Don't forget to leave your link, so I can return your paper (or at least comment on your blog) and so your fellow students can get to know you better.
