Crafty and Thrifty

As I'd mentioned in Flip-flop Rant Explained, my two pairs of jeans were blown out to beyond the bounds of decency. Being a size 22 short, I've never had an easy time finding jeans that fit, flatter and are fashionable. Since I started shopping at Torrid, I've been much happier with my options.

Still, I've not ever had more than two pairs of jeans at once. One reason for this is never have I had so many opportunities to wear jeans. At work, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are dress down jean days, plus they will offer "jeans all week" as a reward certain weeks or months. In the past, I've worn jeans, maybe, two days a week, so even one pair will last for a fairly long time. Now, I'm off Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, then can work in jeans Friday and Saturday. It's a complete reversal of my clothing needs.

So I had these two pairs of jeans that I really like and fit me well that just had the little worn places on the inside seams. I'm too cheap to just toss them even if I had money to spend on clothes more often. I'd just fix them and buy more.

As it is, I just fixed them. I've patched Chris' jeans on occasion, but never done my own.

What I ended up doing was pretty crafty, if I do say so myself. Rather than get those iron on jean patches, I used this iron on patch stuff:

Then I cut a leg off a pair of Chris' jeans that don't fit:

This was the major whole from one pair:

I made sure the patch was large enough on both sides of the seam to cover any possible future weakness.

The iron on stuff is pretty simple. I just had to iron a piece of it the size of the patch onto the patch, then allow to cool. Once cooled, I pined it on the inside of my jeans with the sticky part facing out.

From there, I simply ironed it over and over until the sticky stuff was hot enough to bond.

A point of interest is that I used Kate's iron that I borrowed almost two years ago to iron hem some dress slacks. My iron is in our storage unit in New York. I never, never iron in the traditional sense. If it'll need ironing, I won't buy it. However an iron is very helpful for crafting and sewing projects.

Yeah me! I now have two perfectly good pairs of jeans which at first glance don't even look patched.

So, I bought pants. This is a rare event. The last time I bought pants was October 2006. I'd bought a pair of jeans. Those jeans had worn out over this last summer along with the other pair I'd had even longer. I had patched the holes along the inseam in September. Unfortunately, the iron on stuff I used didn't hold up for long. It would have been better, I think, with at least a few stitches holding the whole contraption together. I don't have a sewing machine and have yet to decide if it's worth the effort to do ...
