Meatloaf
My best friend Kate had a blog worthy event at work a few days back. Alas, she does not have a blog of her own, so I'm compelled to bring her story to the blogosphere.
Kate is younger than me by eleven months, so she's twenty-six and was born in 1981. She works at J.C. Penny's here in rural south east Missouri. The following conversation took place in the break room at Penny's between Kate and a twenty year old guy she works with:
Kate: I've had Meat Loaf stuck in my head all day.
20-year old guy: I hate meatloaf.
Kate: How can you hate Meat Loaf?

Eventually Kate realized she and the guy were having two different conversations.
She went on to mention movies Fight Club
She named the classic Meat Loaf songs; Bat Out of Hell, Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Nothing. No clue who she was talking about.
There are two points I can make about this little tale.
First, Kate and I have always had in common the fact that we are a tad generationally displaced. We tend to know and love things that were popular before our time.
In both our cases, I've always attributed it to close relationships with our mothers. When you are able to accept what your parents like as cool, you end up with taste like ours. We both love The Beatles and Star Trek, among other things, for that reason - our moms love 'em.
Second, Meat Loaf is not that old or out of date. The major hit "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" came out in 1993. Meat Loaf is a pop culture icon. He was in the Chef Aid episode of South Park and sang "Tonight is Right for Love" with Chef on the Chef Aid Album.

How could you miss him entirely?
At the risk of sounding much older than I am, these days people don't have any interest or respect for anything that isn't of the here and now. A song is old if it came out last year, right?
The benefit for someone like me is major advantage in games of trivia.
Hopefully this guy went home to download some Meat Loaf tunes for his iPod like Kate suggested. Even if he doesn't like them, at least he'll have more pop culture knowledge.
Either way, one thing is certain: Kate would murder this guy at Trivial Pursuit.

I love meatloaf. (the singer not the food). lol I actually have his entire cd, bat out of hell downloaded on my mp3 player.

I enjoy both the singer and the food. The catch is I only want either one of them once in a while.
Thanks for stopping by
