Kinsey Institute Celebrates 60th Anniversary of Famed Publication

On January 5, 1958, the book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male was published. The first of it's kind research on human sexuality was spearheaded by Dr. Alfred Kinsey, a zoology professor at Indiana University.

It is hard to imagine a world where there was no reliable scientific information on human sexuality. When Dr. Kinsey was asked in 1938 to teach a course for married students and those considering marriage. Back then, their was simply no one to which one could pose a question about marital intimacy.

A scientist first, Dr. Kinsey looked for data for his students. Finding none, he set about collecting sexual histories in scientific interviews. This early research laid the groundwork for future research in the area of human sexuality. More importantly, in my opinion, it opened the dialog on sexual matters for the first time in America.

For more information on this incredible researcher, I recommend the biopic film Kinsey starring Lian Neeson as Dr. Kinsey.

Dr. Kinsey's research lives on today at The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.

I would encourage celebrating the publication of Sexual Behavior in the Human Male by visiting The Kinsey Institute website to participate in one of their ongoing research studies.
