Always Dakota by Debbie Macomber

My first mistake was reading the third book of a trilogy without reading the other two. My other mistake was assuming that Always Dakota would be a light pleasure ride of a love story.

Debbie Macomber writes western historical romance and contemporary romance. Then there are these one's that I can only call woman's fiction

I've enjoyed some of these titles like The Shop on Blossom Street, the story of a knitting shop in downtown Seattle and the women who take knitting classes. Since I knit and the Seattle area is as close as I come to a home town, I could overlook how depressing the woman's stories were compared to traditional romance novels. They read more like Maeve Binchy than Lori Foster, both authors I adore.

In Always Dakota, the couple who's story graces the back cover synopsis accounts for less than a fourth of the content of the novel. They are almost an afterthought in the busy wrap up of the town folks various stories from books one and two.

I'd assumed my lack of connection and feeling for the people of Buffalo Vally, South Dakota was because I'd skipped the other books. As it turns out, Kate read the first one. She was similarly unimpressed with the residents. We traded stores like gossip and both came to the conclusion that most of them made foolish mistakes. No need for either of us to rush out and read the other two books.

I always have trouble excepting authors who I like some books, but so strongly dislike other titles. It's rare. I tend to read a writer's  entire catalog with equal relish. I think it is the fact that some books I like mean I'll have to continue to read other titles in hopes of a good one. Too many books, too little time.

It should come was no surprise to anyone who knows me that the most populated category of posts for this blog is "Books." My goal for 2008 is to blog every book I read. In an effort not to miss a book, I am also starting a list. For what interest it may hold for readers and for my own use, I humbly present my reading list for the year to be updated as I read and subsequently blog many, many booksHappy Reading, Friends: ...
